Astros come up short of MLB record on Opening Day - Chron

The defending champions suffered their first season-opening loss since 2012 on Thursday.

The Houston Astros have made a tradition of Opening Day wins over the past decade, but this trend came to a close against the Chicago White Sox Thursday night at Minute Maid Park.

Houston appeared to be closing in on its 11th straight season-opening victory, as Yordan Alvarez gave the Astros a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. But a typically steady bullpen couldn't hold the lead, with the White Sox scoring one run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to hand Houston a 3-2 defeat.

The Astros would have broke an MLB record for consecutive Opening Day victories with a win on Thursday, as they entered the day tied with the Boston Beaneaters (1887-96) at 10 in a row. They still hold the high mark for the modern era, with last year's Opening Day win over the Los Angeles Angels moving them past the Seattle Mariners (2007-15), Cincinnati Reds (1983-91) and New York Mets (1975-83).

Below is a look at each of the Astros' previous Opening Day victories during the winning streak.
