Pirates Fall Short Against Hofstra, 3-1 - SHU Pirates

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) had a team-high 13 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2022 season, a 3-1 (21-25, 15-25, 25-21, 22-25) setback to Hofstra on Tuesday.

Seton Hall had more kills and more digs than the Pride, but Hofstra's defense up front proved difficult for the Pirates.  Hofstra had 11.0 team blocks in the contest and The Hall committed 30 attack errors.

Walsh finished with 13 kills and five digs.  Sophomore Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) continued her strong start to the season, finishing with 26 assists, seven digs and four kills.

SET 1:
Hofstra scored six of the first seven points and led for most of the first set.  Down 8-2, the Pirates scored six straight, and a kill by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkey) tied the set at eight.  Trailing 16-13, The Hall scored five of the next six points, and a kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Pirates their first lead, 18-17.  With the score tied at 19, the Pride closed out the opening set with a 6-2 run.

SET 2:
The Pirates struggled the most in the second set, compiling a -.160 attack percentage due in large part to 11 attack errors.  The set was close early, but Hofstra pulled away late.  With the score tied at 11, the Pride went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding 21-12 advantage.  The Hall wasn't able to get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

SET 3:
The Hall looked like a completely different team in the third set.  Trailing 14-11, the Pirates went on a 7-2 run, and a block by Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) and Laila Wallace (Munster, Ind.) gave them an 18-16 advantage.  Hofstra closed to within one, 21-20, but the Pirates responded with the next three points to enter set point.  A kill by Lucas finished off the set, 25-21, in Seton Hall's favor.  The Pirates had a match-high .370 attack percentage in the third set, compared to just .138 for the Pride.

SET 4:
Although the fourth set was close throughout, the Pirates never led.  Down 16-12, The Hall scored three straight to cut its deficit to just one.  Still leading by only one point, 18-17, Hofstra scored five of the next six points to grab a 23-18 advantage.  The Hall made another late run, but ultimately fell in Hofstra's clinching set, 25-22.
