Martin Short Jokes About Competing With 'Only Murders in the Building' Costar Steve Martin For Emmy - Parade Magazine

Martin Short isn't afraid of a little healthy competition when it comes to this year's Emmy Awards

The actor and comedian appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Friday, where he discussed the hit show Only Murders in the Building being nominated for 17 Emmys, including one for which he is up against his own costar, Steve Martin

Both Short, 72, and Martin, 77, are among the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series following their performances in Season 1 of the Hulu show.

"Steve and I are nominated, and you know, if I can't win, I hope he wins," Short said, before joking, "But I can win, so screw him."

He also quipped, "If I lose, I'm going to send Will Smith up to slap him," in reference to Smith's outburst onstage at the 2022 Oscars, where he slapped Chris Rock across the face for making a joke about his wife.

But Short's jokes appeared to be all in good fun, as he also called Martin—who he is currently on a comedy tour with—"the most talented guy in the world."

"We're a team now," he also added.

"He does magic, he juggles, he plays the banjo...and yet somehow he's famous," the comedian sarcastically said of Martin, making Fallon burst out into laughter.

On a more serious note, he also called Martin "amazing," stating that "he's such a unique man."

Putting all the jokes aside, Fallon took a moment to compliment Short on his Only Murders in the Building performance, telling him, "You were phenomenal...You do comedy and you do drama and you make me cry and you make me laugh. You were amazing in the show."

Short and Martin star as Oliver Putnam and Charles-Haden Savage, respectively, alongside Selena Gomez, who has stolen fans' hearts with her character, Mabel Mora.

The fan-favorite show captivated audiences with its first season last fall, which was centered around a mysterious murder at the Arconia hotel. The characters chronicle the death in their true-crime podcast.

The show returned for a second season back in June, where Short, Martin, and Gomez once again attempt to put a series of clues together to catch another killer.

The long-awaited finale of Season 2 airs on Tuesday, August 23, on Hulu, but don't worry—a third season is coming.
