Union Comeback Falls Just Short at St. Lawrence - Union College Athletics

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team nearly pulled off a huge comeback on Friday evening, but the Dutchmen came up a few points short of a victory in a 5-4 loss to St. Lawrence University at Newell Field House.

St. Lawrence (7-7, 3-3 Liberty League) started strong and held on in singles play to earn the victory, helped by a pair of wins each from Nathan Turtledove and Nico Haet.

Union (4-9, 2-4 Liberty League) fell into a big hole to start the day, with the Saints taking all three doubles matches. The visitors came close in two of the three contests, as the tandem of senior Ioannis Binopoulos and sophomore Dimitris Binopoulos came up a break short in an 8-6 second-doubles loss, while senior Cameron Klepper and sophomore Bailey McAtee ended up on the wrong end of a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3), in third doubles.

Moving to singles play, Klepper moved up to the fifth flight but still continued his winning ways, earning his seventh straight singles victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Adam Heilbronner. After SLU took third singles, first-year Ben Jacobs kept the Dutchmen alive with a 6-4, 6-4 second-singles win over Ben Moolman.

The younger Binopoulos made it a 4-3 score with a hard-fought three-set win over Edvin Strandberg at fourth singles, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2, but the elder Binopoulos came one break short in both of the final two sets in a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-4 defeat. Sophomore Ian Schunk still managed to finish match strong for Union, coming back from a set down to defeat John Hill-Edgar at sixth singles, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.

Union will return to the courts next Friday with a home match against Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 2 p.m.
