Singles Rally Comes Up Short vs. Nebraska - Purdue Boilermakers - Purdue Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A singles rally was not enough for the Purdue men's tennis team to knock off No. 75 Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers dropped their penultimate home match of the regular season 4-2 to the Cornhuskers.

Nebraska took the opening point in doubles. The Cornhuskers won 6-3 and 6-4 at No. 2 and 3, respectively. Purdue's top pairing in Michal Wozniak and Piotr Galus were two points away from knocking off Victor Moreno Lozano and Nic Wiedenhorn but saw their match go unfinished at 5-3.

Athell Bennett put Purdue on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dario Huber at No. 1. The win was Bennett's 86 of his career tying him with Jim Gray (1985-88) for seventh in program history in career singles wins.

After Nebraska jumped back out to a 3-1 lead, Gabriele Brancatelli dominated Calvin Mueller in the second set at No. 2 to win 7-6(3), 6-2.

Piotr Galus attempted a valiant comeback in the third set against Roni Hietaranta at No. 5, but the Polish international came up short in a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 loss. Rohan Sachdev's match went unfinished with the rookie leading Victor Moreno Lozano 6-7(3), 7-5, 4-1.

The Boilermakers will honor seniors Athell Bennett and Andre Suzanne in a prematch ceremony Sunday prior to the noon start against Wisconsin, the final home match of the 2022 season.
