Illinois Falls Short at Indiana in Series Opener - University of Illinois Athletics - Fighting Illini

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — After tying the score with three runs in the top of the eighth inning, Illinois dropped the series opener at Indiana on Friday afternoon, 7-6. Taylor Jackson and Cam McDonald both had a multi-hit days with a combined three RBI while Jacob Campbell picked up his third home run in three games as he tallied two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Indiana (19-23, 5-8) jumped on the board first with four runs in the first two innings while the Illini loaded the bases in both the first and second innings but ultimately came away with no runs. Jacob Campbell connected on his third home run in the last three games and sixth of the season in the fifth inning, a solo shot to cut into the deficit to make the score 4-1.

Illinois (21-18, 11-5) scored a combined three runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings before a three-run eighth inning knotted the score at six. Indiana ultimately walked off in the bottom of the ninth to take the series opener, 7-6.

Indiana's Reese Sharp is credited with the win and moves to 1-6 on the season while the Illini's Joe Glassey (2-1) gets the loss.

NOTES

• Cam McDonald has reached base in every game this season (50-game on base streak dating back to 5/8/21).
• Jacob Campbell has homered in three consecutive games. He's now tied for the team-lead with six home runs this season.
• Justin Janas has been hit by a pitch in seven consecutive games (20 HBP this season).
• Illinois has recorded 10+ hits in 23 of 39 games this season.
• Illinois is now 11-5 in the B1G.
