Wildcats Fall Short of Upset at #2 Rams - Central Washington University Athletics

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas - After taking an early 9-0 lead, the Central Washington University football team had some offensive woes, leading to a 12-22 loss at the #2 Angelo State Rams.
 
"I'm proud of the effort our kids played with in all 3 phases of the game, but disappointed in our offensive execution down the stretch," Head Coach Chris Fisk said. "We needed to be firing to knock off the number two team in the country tonight.
 
JJ Lemming started at QB for the Wildcats, logging nine completions for 139 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Cameron Daniels led CWU rushers with 15 attempts for 55 yards. Tre'jon Henderson had 10 rushes for 54 yards. Payton Glasser recorded 80 yards on two catches with a touchdown.
 
Daeon Hudson and Jahleel Breland led the CWU defense in total tackles (10 each). Brett Accimus registered eight tackles and one forced fumble.
 
Zach Bronkhorst had a great performance at QB for the Rams, logging 228 yards and three touchdowns. Nate Omayebu III rushed for 104 yards.
 
The Wildcats started the game on defense but quickly forced an Angelo State punt. Lemming targeted Glasser about 10 yards downfield, that was tipped into the air by a Rams defender, but still found the arms of Glasser. He took it 76 yards for the opening score. After a missed extra-point attempt, CWU had a 6-0 lead.
 
The Crimson and Black defense stayed hot, forcing a pair of punts from the Rams.
 
Later in the first quarter, the Wildcats had a drive start at the ASU 42-yard line. A pair of big plays from Henderson and Marcus Cook set up a 25-yard field goal attempt that Ashton Wolff knocked through. The 'Cats held 9-0 timeout with 1:18 left in the first quarter.
 
At the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats outgained the Rams, totaling 153 yards to Angelo State's 56 yards.
 
Both offenses stayed dormant early in the second quarter. ASU had the ball with 6:32 remaining in the half and then the Wildcats defense came up big. Accimus forced a fumble recovered by Dominic Wieburg. The Crimson and Black were unable to capitalize as Lemming threw an interception on the resulting possession.
 
Angelo State had a drive start at their 45-yard line with 1:36 left on the clock. Zach Bronkhorst threw a screen to Kason Philips who took it 42 yards to the CWU 8-yard line. On 4th and Goal from the CWU 1-yard line, the Rams elected to keep their offense on the field. Christian Penny and Daeon Hudson came up with a stop, keeping Nate Omayebu III out of the endzone.
 
Entering halftime, CWU led 9-0. The Wildcats recorded 174 total yards in the first half compared to Angelo State's 149 yards.
 
CWU's offense continued their struggles to start the second half, going three and out.
 
The Rams finally got on the scoreboard as Bronkhorst hit Kel Williams for 20-yard touchdown strike. Angelo State cut the CWU lead to 9-7.
 
On the next drive for the Wildcats, the offense drove into the Angelo State half. After stalling, Wolff hit another field goal, this time from 42 yards out to extend the 'Cats lead to 12-7.
 
The Rams responded immediately. On 3rd and 6 from the ASU 34-yard line, Bronkhorst hit Zorhan Rideaux for a 66 yard touchdown. Angelo State took their first lead of the game as the Wildcats fell behind 12-15 with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
 
Angelo State added another touchdown to the scoreboard later in the fourth quarter. After Bronkhorst hit Matthew Carter for 40 yards, he connected with Carter again for a 2-yard touchdown strike. CWU fell behind 12-22.
 
The Wildcats drop to 5-4 overall, 5-3 in LSC play. Next Saturday, Nov. 12, they'll honor their seniors as they take on Texas Permian Basin at 1:00 p.m.
