#PurpleHa23: OLB Michael Short commits to ECU - 247Sports

East Carolina has picked up its initial in-state commitment of the 2023 class in the form of Charlotte, N.C., native and Mallard Creek High School prospect Michael Short.

Short, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, was offered by ECU back on May 2, and he took his official visit this week. Short was also offered by Air Force, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Connecticut, James Madison, Liberty, Memphis, Navy, Rice, Brown, Dartmouth, Yale and more.

Recruited by some schools as an inside linebacker, Short was offered by the Pirates as a 'rush' outside linebacker. That means he will play on the edge to begin with, and try to use his length and athleticism off the edge to his advantage. An all-conference pick last season, Short amassed 93 tackles, including 21 tackles for loss as a junior.

"Overall, the visit was great," Short said. "I was really impressed with how genuine the coaches were and how much of a family feel it was. Being around the players, hanging out with my host, I really felt comfortable around the team. I know it was a great group of guys. Watching film with Coach Daoust, and him explaining the position they will have me in, I feel like it was a great fit for me."

Short's commitment keeps the ECU-Mallard Creek pipeline going a bit longer. The Pirates recently added a pair of Division I transfers in Ryan Jones and Parker Moorer that used to attend high school there before going to Oklahoma and West Virginia, respectively. They each elected to transfer back closer to home at ECU. Jones actually hosted Short during his official visit.

Short was recruited to ECU by staff members Tripp Weaver, who recruits Charlotte for the Pirates, as well as future position coach Roy Tesh, and defensive coordinator Blake Harrell.

East Carolina has now picked up two commitments on the day in the form of Short and fellow 2023 safety Gregory Turner.
